How to Install a Wall-Mounted Ballet Barre: Step-by-Step Guide

Installing a wall-mounted ballet barre is a satisfying afternoon project that will serve you for decades. This guide walks through every step — from finding your studs to your first pliés.
What You'll Need
- Stud finder
- Level (at least 24 inches)
- Drill and drill bits
- Measuring tape and pencil
- Screwdriver
- Your Custom Barres bracket kit (included with every order)
Step 1: Find Your Studs
Wall studs are typically spaced 16 inches apart. Use a stud finder and mark each one with a small pencil mark at the installation height. Every bracket must go into a stud — drywall anchors alone won't hold the load safely over time.
Step 2: Determine the Right Height
The standard heights depend on who's using the barre:
- Children (ages 6–10): 32–36 inches from the floor
- Teens and adults: 40–44 inches
- Double barre: Lower barre at 32-34 inches, upper at 40-42 inches
- Physical therapy: (roughly hip height when standing) Often 36–38 inches for more accessible height
Mark your chosen height at each stud location and check that all marks are level across the wall.
Step 3: Attach the Brackets
Each Custom Barres bracket ships with hardware for wood stud installation. Hold each bracket at your marked position, check it's level, and drill pilot holes before driving the screws. Do not skip pilot holes — they prevent splitting and ensure the screws seat fully.
Step 4: Mount the Barre
With all brackets installed, simply rest the barre in the bracket saddles and secure them with screws provided. Once again, make sure to start with a pilot hole. Custom Barres brackets are designed to cradle the barre securely without visible fasteners from the front. Gently apply weight and test the stability before your first use.
Pro Tips
- If your wall is plaster over masonry, you'll need masonry anchors — can be purchased at your local hardware store or can be purchased seperately at Custom Barres
- Install the barre at least 12 inches from the wall so you can work through a full arm port de bras without touching
- For mirrored walls, mark stud locations before the mirror goes up
