How to Choose the Right Ballet Barre Length for Your Space

The Standard Spacing Rule
The gold standard in professional ballet studios: allow 3 feet of barre per student. This gives enough room for a full warm-up without elbowing neighbors, and matches the typical reach of an extended port de bras. For home practice with a single user, a 6–8 foot barre is ideal — enough to step along the barre during exercises without feeling constrained, while fitting most residential walls.
Studio Class Size Planning
- 8 students → 24 feet of barre (can be one 24' run or two 12' sections)
- 12 students → 36 feet of barre
- 16 students → 48 feet of barre
Most studios achieve this with multiple sections along two or three walls. An L-shaped or U-shaped layout around the perimeter is the most space-efficient arrangement.
Measuring Your Wall
- Measure the clear wall span (window to window, or corner to doorframe).
- Subtract 6–12 inches from each end — barres that run fully edge-to-edge can interfere with doors and light switches, and make it awkward for students at the ends of the barre.
- That's your usable barre length for that wall.
Brackets and Sections
Long barres are typically installed in sections joined at bracket points rather than as one continuous rail. Custom Barres ships standard sections in 6, 8, 10, and 12-foot lengths. For runs longer than 12 feet, two sections are joined at a center bracket — invisible to users and structurally equivalent to a single piece. Plan bracket placement so they land on studs. Spacing every 4–6 feet along a wall barre is typical, with end brackets 6–12 inches from each end.
Portable Barre Length
For portable freestanding barres, the most versatile home length is 5–6 feet. This stores against a wall, handles a single practitioner comfortably for all exercises, and doesn't require a large space to use.
Don't Forget Clearance in Front
Dancers need 3–4 feet of clear floor space in front of the barre for extensions, développés, and grande battement. If your wall is only 2 feet from a piece of furniture or another wall, that's a safety hazard regardless of barre length. Questions about your specific layout?
